Steps to Call Medicare Quickly

It's frustrating enough to have to sit on the phone waiting for Medicare to pick up but it's worse when you aren't properly prepared for the phone call itself. Take these precautions prior to calling Medicare.

* Provider Transaction Access Number (PTAN)
* The name of the office - This must be specific to the PTAN reported
* The Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) of the patient in question
* The patient's name as it appears on the Medicare card
* The date of service in question
* Any Remarks codes and descriptions from the Standard Provider Remittance (SPR) for the claim in question
* Your question

If the issue is complex it may need to be escalated to a specialist. They will need this information from you:

* Your name
* The name of the doctor or facility
* PTAN
* Your telephone number (and extension)

They will transfer you to the specialist at this time. If it drops you to voice mail leave a detailed information and Medicare will respond in 10 days.
